One of the most common questions our consumer scientists get is whether you should wash your pillows and how often?
The simple answer is yes. If your pillow is washable you should give it a good cleaning because dirt, oil and dust mites can build up over time on your pillows.

So how often should you wash?
The washing schedule for pillows is going to depend on personal preference, whether you use protective pillow covers and your habits. If the pillow looks soiled or smells musty, it’s certainly time to wash it. If you apply face lotion before going to bed or if you have oily skin or scalp, washing more often may be needed to keep it fresh.

What’s the best method for washing pillows?
Always check the care label first for the best method. Most pillows are machine washable however there are some pillows like memory foam that are not. In general, wash in the warmest water safe for the material. Measure your detergent precisely making sure not to overdose. This could lead to over sudsing. Select the second rinse option if available on your machine to make sure all of the detergent is rinsed clean.Expert Tip: Wash pillows two at a time to keep the washer balanced during the spin cycle.

Regular cleaning can help reduce dirt, dust and allergens, especially during the winter and spring months when allergens and germs are common.
